This historical fiction revolves around the Jernigan Family. The Jernigans are fictional citizens of modest means, living in the shadow Stone Mountain in Georgia. The family migrated from South Carolina, bringing several slaves with them in the 1840s to begin farming.
This story is primarily about the little hamlet of Stone Mountain, Georgia, which originally was incorporated as New Gibraltar in 1839.
The story encompasses the years before, during and immediately after the Civil War as experienced by this family and their loved ones, bringing to life the history of this period.
The Jernigan's have twins, a boy and a girl. The son, Norman goes to Georgia Military Institute in Marietta and room with Paul Turner Goldsmith. Paul Goldsmith is buried in the Stone Mountain cemetery and actually attended GMI during the Civil War.
The GMI cadets became State Militia during the war and were the last organized unit to turn in their arms at the end of the war this side of the Mississippi..
Polly the twin sister of Norman elopes with Legare Hill and runs off to Savannah. Legare is the son of Congressman Joshua Hill in real life. Polly was suppose to marry her next door neighbor, but she and Legare fell in love at first sight.
The Hill's are from Madison. When Legare turns 17 years old he musters into the Confederate Army in Savannah in real life. (Kinda strange that I had them elope to Savannah not knowing this where he was to enlist.)
