Southern food is a mixture of traditions brought by our Bristish Isles, German, French, West African and American Indian forebears adapted to to the needs and ingredients of the American South.
It includes things such as breaded and fried meats and vegetables, stews, soups, baked vegetables, roasted meats, barbecue ( which does not mean grilled over charcoal), pies cakes , pickle made of anything that can be fit into a jar, beans, peas, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams, fresh fruits, puddings, gravies, cole slaw, sauerkraut, potato salad, ham, sausage and a whole lot more.

I have no idea what African American cuisine is. I have never heard of it.
