Out of these “border” states . ( I included Maryland and Deleware because they are below the Mason Dixon line (well most of Deleware is).
Virginia
Missouri
Kentucky
Maryland
Deleware
Kansas
Personally – Virginia has my vote!

None of those aforementioned states are that Southern- but then again you did say they were the “border states”.
I would have say Virginia , most definitely would be the most Southern of that list.
Virginia is a lot more like the “Old South” with the exception of maybe the DC suburbs and Hampton Roads. Richmond just oozes Southern- moreso than even Nashville or Atlanta- its more like Charleston or Savannah
Kentucky? LOL. Kentucky to me was virtually indistinguishable from Ohio. Its not Southern at all. Also it wasnt in the Confederacy. Of that list, Virginia was the only state in the Confederacy. So yeah- Virginia is Southern, but compared to the Deep South, only slightly more so.
I never been to Missouri. Deleware and Maryland might be below the Mason Dixon line- but those are more Mid-Atlantic states- although Southern Maryland did seem rather Southern to me.

From the particular list you provided to choose from,
I agree that Virginia is the most ‘Southern’.
Followed by Kentucky.
Maryland & Delaware seem a bit too ‘New Engalnd-y’.
While Missouri & Kansas almost more ‘Mid-Western-y’
than they are ‘Southern.’

I’d have to say Kentucky. No where I’ve ever been from that list(Virginia included…well, I was only in northern Virigina, so maybe that has something to do with it) seemed more southern to me.

I would say Virginia… I am visualizing it in my mind. I took USA geography many, many, many years ago. I’m from Northern Canada, Yukon to be exact. We’re next door to the state of Alaska.
